Tips:
1. Always be smiling when someone opens the door. I read someone once, it should seem as if a huge smile is just fading from your face when the person opens the door. It works for me.
2. Don't wait for them to smile and be friendly first. You set the tone.
3. Instead of saying anything else, I almost always say, "How's your evening going so far?" Or 'day.'
But the 'so far' really makes it a different and better question, than just "how's your day going?" To that, people will just say, "good." You'll be surprised at the responses you get when you smile and say a friendly, sincere, "Hi, how's your evening going so far?" and then listen.
